Dick DeVos Leading the Way in Philanthropic Giving

Although Dick DeVos’ name is synonymous with the Amway empire co-founded by his father Rich, not enough attention has been given to his charitable contributions. The amount is staggering In comparison to political contributions, with $11.6 million dollars given out in 2015 alone- More than double the 5.3 million over the past five years as reported by Betsy DeVos reported to the federal government as part of the vetting process for her position as Secretary of the Department of Education.

 

The Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation have given back to the community nearly $139 million dollars over their lifetimes. However, giving is an even larger part of the Amway family Dynasty, with DeVos’ father and four grown children contributing a total of $104 million dollars in charity donations in 2015. According to Forbes Magazine data, the family has given $1.33 billion, or roughly one quarter of their $5.2 billion dollar fortune.

 

Among the philanthropic endeavors for Dick and Betsy, it’s evident that education is a top priority. In 2015 alone, more than $3 million was earmarked for educational causes, which made roughly 26 percent of their total charitable donations for the year. Additionally, their foundation awarded 3 percent or $357,000 for educational reform.

 

When asked about educational priorities, DeVos said that it became became clear to he and his wife over time that the current system was not fulfilling the American dream. In other words, he believes the issue is increasingly a civil rights problem. During an interview with MLive and The Grand Rapids Press, Devos also stated that kids growing up in the wrong zip code can have a difficult time reaching the American Dream, and education is a necessary part to achieving that dream.

 

Although critics argue that school vouchers and Charter Schools take tax dollars away from public schools, DeVos believes choice addresses the failings of a one size fits all program inherent within the public school curriculum. DeVos truly believes there are many great teachers and administrators doing wonderful work, but a better job can be done at helping talented educators to be even more effective in reaching out to every child.

 

A specific breakdown of philanthropic education contributions for 2015 is currently unavailable. However, according to the Foundation’s tax records in 2013 include several Major beneficiaries. Among those are the West Michigan Aviation Academy ($315,000), Ferris State University in Big Rapids ($100,000), Detroit Charter School Company New Urban Learning ($25,000), Potter’s House in Wyoming ($301,000). Rehoboth Christian School New Mexico ($50,000), and Dick DeVos’ alma mater Northwood University in Midland ($200,000).

It is no simple task to reform the education system that is implemented in current times, mainly due to the fact that the schools are run by the government. If the schools were privately owned with competition with other privately owned schools then basic economics would improve the school system. This particular private school was providing great education for low-income families and DeVos’ admired the level of determination of the parents to ensure that their children were getting appropriate education as well as being safe and cared for. After learning of the struggles these families faced to have access to the same quality of education the DeVos’ could have easily afforded, DeVos’ then began supporting several students for the tuition cost of the school which gradually built itself into the significant generosity she provides to the school currently.

It was the interactions with this school that empowered DeVos’ to fight for what she thinks that every American deserves in education, the access to quality education of the parent’s choice and not mandated by government on how to perform better, but rather by the natural competitive market of private schools. If tuition was not guaranteed and had to be sought for so that the school stays operating than that alone will improve the school system by increasing the quality of teachers and faculty to ensure students are getting the best education. Giving the power back to the family in school decisions is one of the strongest ways to enact school reform, and also one of the more obvious, but that doesn’t mean that matters will change over night.

Podcast Advertising Results

Norman Pattiz, the Executive Chairman of Podcast One, and Tom Webster, the VP of Strategy at Edison Research, recently announced the results that came in after a series of studies were conducted on the impact of Podcasts as an advertising vehicle.

The results of the study, which at how Podcasts influenced attitudes on five major consumer brands in the US, were released in February of 2017. What’s found is that when used strategically, Podcasts can definitely have an impact on the way major brands are perceived by the public.

Results of the Podcast Study

The study was the first of its kind, and it studied five brands that represent different product and service categories. All of this makes the study more broad reaching in its scope and significance.

What was found was that over 60% of the Podcast study participants retained information about a grocery store brand they heard about in the Podcast (as compared to 7% initially). Financial services and lawn and garden products also saw awareness of their brands increase after the study, while the opinion of automotive aftermarket services also became much more positive after the study was completed. The positive results in awareness for casual dining restaurants was also significant.

According to Norman Pattiz, all of this shows the real impact advertising on Podcasts has. The studies were conducted in 2016 over three sessions, by Edison Research. What is clear is that people who are listening to Podcasts are very receptive to the messages they hear, which is very good news for advertisers.

Bloomberg revealed that Norman Pattiz is a man whose career has long been intimately involved in broadcasting. He founded the leading advertiser supported Podcasting network, www.PodcastOne.com, which produced over 340 hours of programming per week.

How Securus Technologies Closed a Criminal Investigation

Trying to close a cold case can take me and my team days, weeks, or even years, all dependent on the leads and cooperation we get during that investigation. I was in charge of working one case where the suspect basically vanished into thin air after jumping bail, and his new identity meant he could be here in the city or thousands of miles away. I was getting heat to get this case closed, so I turned to some unconventional methods to get help.

 

The team at Securus Technologies had recently installed a new inmate call system in our local prison, and it was about time I was trained to use the LBS software to help in the investigation. The CEO of Securus Technologies, Ricard Smith, says that his 1,000 employees out of the Texas-based company all have but one objective, making this world safer for us all. We were going to see if that was true.

 

Once I was able to understand how the inmate call system could help, it made things easier. The software that monitors chatter between inmates on the phone does the work of dozen of corrections officers, identifying key verbiage that is needed in certain investigations. No sooner did we input the name of our suspect, we started to get hits. The covert alert feature pointed us in a very unlikely direction. It appears our suspect had his name changed but he was working for a landscaping company here in town.

 

The Securus Technologies system detected talk between a relative who was inquiring with his family about the suspect, not thinking anyone was listening or really caring about him. That tip lead us to the company early one day where we found our suspect working on a property, needless to say he was escorted to prison where he sits today.
